Erik: He was, indeed, in Col. Falkner's (Wm. Faulkner's grandfather!) 7th MS Cavalry, but was transferred to the 23rd MS Infantry. He was captured at or near Big Black (part of the Vicksburg Campaign) in May 1863 and sent to several Yankee hellholes (i.e., POW camps). He was exchanged, but had some sort of fever and died in the North Carolina Hospital at Richmond, VA, in the summer of 1863. I did not note a burial location being mentioned. You can order both of his Compiled Military Service Records (don't know if they would count as one record, since he's one man) from the link at the top of this page.
