Actually, it's simpler than that. Rosecrans' reversal sent a wave of panic down the chain of command, and the 16th Corps was ordered to be prepared to march to Rosecrans' aid. On 26 September, Hurlbut issued orders to the 16th Corps to consolidate and be prepared to march to Chattanooga.
