Re: Col Sul Ross and Dets. of 6th Tx & 1st MS Cav

I am finding more material on this, but have not reached the bottom, yet! S. D. Lee, Generals Chalmers and Ferguson we also involved in this action to stop reinforcement of the Union withdrawel from Chickamunga, or a raid. With the Union reversal Chalmers apparently decided to attack Moscow. He with one force attacked a bridge and S. D. Lee and Ross attacked another at the same time a Union cavalry Regiment was returning from patrol. The Southern forces were doing well until until the Union forces in Moscow were reinforced by a brigade on a train. Political correctness has Union Black troops in Moscow winning the battle, but they do not mention the reinforcement. Ross had two detachments. If he had the Texas Brigade which he did not command until the end of December 1863 after his return to Mississippi his actions might have been much stronger.

One purpose of this research is to see if Major Henry W. Bridges was there with what Troops. Bridges was a company commander in the 6th Texas in 1862, but had been working for General S. D. Lee from March to September 1863. In battles supporting Ferguson, Bridges is commended and recommended for colonel. Early in 1864 Bridges was killed in a cavalry charge protecting S. D. Lee, Wirt and Ferguson and allowing them to get out of a tight spot. We have not been able to define Bridges' service from September to December. His service records are scattered over several different units, including I/6th TX, 1st Ark (Stirmans), Battalion under S. D. Lee with companies from Waul and others.

If anyone has knowledge of Bridges' service in this time frame or the actions of the Union and southern forces involved Sep to Dec in north Alabama and southern Tennessee please make a comment.
