J. E. Jones, Private, Company D, 38th Mississippi Volunteers*, enlisted March 11, 1862 at Maridian [sic]/Marian Sta. by Capt. J. M. Hicks for 3 years or war**, joined by transfer May 20 at Jackson, promoted 2nd Sergeant, n.d., sick in hospital at Lockhart about October 30, 1862 though February, 1863, killed at Vicksburg June 30, 1863, Hebert's Brigade, no further records

* The 38th Regiment Mississippi Infantry was organized about May 12, 1862. Early in 1864 the designation was changed to 38th Regiment Mississippi Mounted Infantry, and in 1865 it was known as the 38th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry.

** Originally enlisted in Capt. J. M. Hicks, Company H, new Co. C, 41st Mississippi Infantry

March 1862-July 1864

Company D (Wilkinson Guards)

Stationed at Columbus, Mississippi, April 29-June 30, 1862.

Stationed at Saltillo, Mississippi, July-August 1862.

Stationed at Camp Rogers, Mississippi, September-October 1862.
September 19.— This company was in the action at Iuka, Missis-
sippi.
October 3-4.— Was in the engagement at Corinth.

Stationed at Vaughn's [Station], November-December 1862.

Stationed at Snyder's Mill, January-February 1863.

Stationed at Enterprise, April 30-October 31, 1863.
The company was engaged in the defense of Vicksburg and
occupied a position in the trenches forty-eight consecutive days
without being relieved.
