Marion,

Sergeant John E. Jones was the younger brother of Captain John Henry Jones who commanded Company D of the 38th Mississippi. John Henry Jones wrote extensively about his Civil War service, including a long article about his experiences during the Siege of Vicksburg for the Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society. Entitled "The Rank and File at Vicksburg," the article can be found online here: http://books.google.com/books?id=jfo7AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA17&dq=the+rank+and+file+at+vicksburg&hl=en&ei=PN6mTp3fA5K4twfXsPkN&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=the%20rank%20and%20file%20at%20vicksburg&f=false

I also have several newspaper articles written by Jones that mention his service, and the loss of his brothers who served with him in the 38th - in addition to John, who was killed at Vicksburg, his two other brothers were killed at the Battle of Harrisburg, Mississippi, on July 14, 1864. I also have a picture of John's grave at Vicksburg - he is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, but not in the Confederate section of the cemetery.

I hope this helps,

Jeff Giambrone
