Mike:

The Confederate soldier who died at Fort Delaware was 2nd Sergeant John W. CROW, Company K, 42nd Mississippi Infantry. John was enrolled on 14 MAY 1862 at Saltillo, Mississippi. He was captured at Gettysburg on 1 JUL 1863, arrived at Fort Delaware on 6 JUL 1863 from Fort McHenry, and died at Fort Delaware from a unknown cause on 12 OCT 1863. He was buried in the soldier's burial ground directly across the Delaware River in Salem County, New Jersey. His name, rank and unit of service appear on the bronze memorial plates at the base of the Confederate memorial in Finns Point National Cemetery.

A "Record" made for Company K dated 27 OCT 1864 shows that John was born in Alabama and was 33 years of age when he enrolled on 14 MAY 1862. John was married, a farmer by occupation, and a resident of Fulton, Itawamba County, Mississippi.

The Fort Delaware Society would appreciate receiving a brief biographical sketch of this man;s life before entering service and a photo of him, if any exists, so that we can display his likeness on our Photo Display Board.
