I don't have a copy on hand but I believe you can reference the memoirs of Horace Porter, one of Grant's staff officers, who said that Grant entered the city and saw women working in a factory (I can't remember what type) and told them to take everything they wanted home with them. After they left, he had the industrial center of the city burned, which naturally spread to the rest of the city.

If the gentleman from Massachusetts doubts the liberal use of the torch, please suggest that he research antebellum records in any courthouse in Mississippi located between Jackson and Meridian. I can find nothing on my ancestors in those counties, or Lancaster County, South Carolina, thanks to Mr. Sherman's total war. I hope this helps.
