Another point to consider.

Assume that the Federal officer on the scene thought about removing 4,000 Enfield carbines found at the railway station. He's involved in a raid, which means he cannot delay his mission or cause his command to move at a slower pace on the road. Suppose that a single carbine weighs at least seven pounds. Not counting the wooden packing crates, 4,000 Enfield carbines would weigh 28,000 pounds.

Since rail transport on the M&O isn't an option, how would Federal cavalrymen on a raid go about transporting several tons of muzzle-loading carbines from point A inside Confederate lines to point B inside their own lines? Descruction of all these carbines would be no small task, but really - is there a reasonable alternative?
