He was not wounded at Vicksburg. The battles around Vicksburg took place in 1863. His mother, Nancy, filed a claim for his back-pay and in it she stated that "he died at Columbus, Miss. on the 17th day of August 1862 of disease in camp leaving no widow, child, or father.
