The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Re: MS 4th Inf ~ Your Ancestors

I have seen information that shows the 4th Mississippi was reorganized at Jackson, Ms on Sept 26, 1862. Most of the other recently returned Fort Donelson POW regiments were also reorganized about this time at Jackson.

The unit was then detached from the other POW regiments and sent to Ponchatoula on either that same day or perhaps on Sept 28th.

After arriving at Ponchatoula, they were reorganized yet again, perhaps on Oct 1st.

It is my guess that only the companies were reorganized at Jackson, and then the regiment itself was reorganized at Ponchatoula with the election of field officers, including Layton to Col, Adair Lt-Col, Gee Major.

Does this sound about right to you guys?
