Sorry it took so long to respond. My information say that he was captured at the battle of Rappahannock in Virgina. He was initially confined at the Old Capitol Prison in Wasing and then moved to Johnsons island on 11/9/63. He wrote a letter to a prison he met from the Union Army who was confined in Salibury and requested his assistance in geting out of Prison. Capt. Drew from Vermont carried a letter to his rep who hand carried this letter to Lincoln. Lincoln endosed the letter releasing Gray fro Johnson Island. I have this letter
