Re: Woodard Brothers 64th North Carolina Infantry

Col. Martin:

Thank you very much.

"My" James (C.) Woodward was born in 1841, died in 1913, so he was only 20 when enlisted. He was born in Lee County, VA; later had major property holdings in Lexington, KY; in 1890 moved to Fountain City (suburb of Knoxville), TN, married Fannie Starnes of Rutledge (Hawkins County, near Washington County), TN; and later developed Fountain City, TN including the 40-50 room Fountain Head Hotel.

The URL I have sent is his "complete" biography.

My local historic library (McClung Historical Collection) has all TN Civil War unit microfilm and I have copied his 26th TN INF record, which includes his being captured at Ft. Donelson, and later transferred to Allen's NC Legion (obviously the 64th), however no age is given for verification that this James Woodward is the same one.

I will try to determine if the other Woodwards listed in your helpful Email might be brothers or cousins.

While on a research trip to Frankfort, Kentucky, I found another James Woodward from the Lexington area but he survived only a short time after the war, so there seems to have been more than one Confederate by the name of James Woodward.

If you have time, could you please read the biographical sketch and see if anything there suggests "my" Woodward and NC's Woodward are the same person.

Thanks,
