1st Lieut. Harrison Purcell's conduct in the battle of the 1st inst was not satisfactory to me; he was either frightened or lost his presence of mind. I think the good of the service will be promoted by accepting his resignation, and I respectfully recommend it.July 22nd, 1862. Wm. J. Clark, Col. comdg.
The "battle of the 1st inst." was that of Malvern Hill VA.
