Several men named Thomas Barnes served in North Carolina units during the war. It would help to know where this man lived in 1860 (county and state).

Martin V. Barnes enlisted at Wilson NC, Jan. 20,1862, joining Co. "D", 2nd North Carolina Regiment. For the most part MVB was present with his regiment in its different campaigns and battles until captured with a large part of his command at Kelly's Ford on the Rappahannock River, Nov. 7, 1863. He was released for parole and exchange at Point Lookout MD, Feb. 24, 1865. Copies of his military service record are available here.

A little about the regiment can be gleaned in this post --
