Bruce - In my book on the Pettigrew - Trimble regiments at Gettysburg I have your ancestor listed as following:
Private James Francis Marion Beard 21 yr old enlisted Mecklenburg Co. 3/1/62 (later Corp W North Anna)

My notes show that he surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox and was not taken captive at
