Lucius W. Gash 11th North Carolina

An obscure diary by William Farland Keys, Company K, 143rd Pennsylvania is on microfilm at the Rutgers University Libraries, Special Collections and Archives, New Brunswick, NJ. The diary abruptly ends on 30 June 1863 the day before the battle of Gettysburg. At the back of the diary, under the entry for Tuesday, 29 December 1863 is the following handwritten entry: "Sergt. Lucius W. Gash, Co. K, 11 NC Troops, Kirkland's Brig., Heth's Div." Gash was reportedly wounded in the foot on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg when he was a Corporal. It is speculation, but perhaps Gash recovered Keys' diary from the battlefield (the two units were in close proximity on 1 July) and employed it for his personal use.
