The best I can come up with would be in the vicinity of Garysburg, NC. The documents listed below may contain the location. There is also the possibility that his father could have had his body returned home for burial, or he may have died at home.

Residence was not listed;
Enlisted on 7/22/1861 at Forsyth County, GA as a Private.
On 7/22/1861 he mustered into "D" Co. NC 2nd Infantry
He died of disease on 10/22/1861

His father Philip P. Porter, Forsyth County, State of Georgia, filed claim for his pay & allowances due

On the 12th of December, the Battalion was ordered to Wilmington, N. C. near which place it remained until the 1st of February, where it was ordered to Roanoke Island, N. C.

Nov. & Dec.,1861, stationed at Camp Belvidine, near Wilmington, NC

The 2nd Infantry Battalion was formed at Garysburg, North Carolina, during the fall of 1861. Five companies were from Madison, Stokes, Randolph, Surry, and Forsyth counties, one from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and two from Pike and Meriwether counties, Georgia.
