I believe John L. Southard was the brother of my great-grandfather, Gray Southard. 4 Southard brothers were drafted in 1862 to serve in Company D of the 45th NC Regiment, and one (Macklin) was killed at Spotsylvania. Company D was sent to Danville, Virginia, to serve as prison guards at a POW camp (actually a prison in tobacco warehouses) in Danville. It was here that my great-grandfather's brother died of disease (while serving as a guard). My grandfather, John Southard, was, I believe, named after his uncle.
