The North Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: looking for n. c . 63 home guards

You're right, but the term "home guards" isn't there.

The roster is for Capt. John Randolph Erwin's Co. "F", 63rd North Carolina State Troops. Records of these soldiers are filed by the National Archives as a North Carolina cavalry command, for which a different numbering system exists.

As mentioned earlier, John P. Ferrell has a service file with the 5th North Carolina Cavalry. Copies of his service file are available through a message board service:

The 5th North Carolina Cavalry served with Lee's Army of North Virginia. If any of the members of this famous command was alive today to talk with us about the regiment, we would be quickly informed that these men never were home guards!

Feel free to contact me at cssoldier@hotmail.com about a history of this regiment.
