Burial of Private Byrd, 44th NC
In Response To: Civil War 1862 1863 ()

Hello Jean,

The University Cemetery at UVA has a W. Bird of the 44th NC Regiment listed as buried in their Confederate Section as found at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/albemarle/cemeteries/confcem.txt

The National Park Service Soldiers & Sailors system lists a H.W. Bird (a.k.a. Byrd) and an H. Bird. Perhaps someone with access to Manarin & Jordan's NC Regiments could lookup H. Bird to see whether he survived the war, which would rule him out as the man buried in Charlottesville, Virginia.

If Henry died in September of 1863, we can rule out Bristoe Station as the place of death so many found there the following month. The 44th NC & the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia were entrenched along the South Bank of the Rapidan River in the vicinity of Orange (Court House) Virginia during September 1863.

There is a Confederate Cemetery in Orange, but despite trying for several years, I have not yet found a list of names of the men buried there. The list is out of print and apparently nearly forgotten.

Regards,
Manassas
