Re: John H. Martin - "Thomas Confederate Legion"

Hi Susan,

Pvt John H. Martin, Co. G. "Infantry Regiment," Thomas'North Carolina Legion. Enrolled 7/19/1862. He gives his home as " Jackson County,N.C." This info comes from the Book " Storm in The Mountians " by Vernon Crow. It may still be in print( Copyright 1982.) The Thomas Legion was made up of men from Western North Carolina, East Tennessee, and a few from Southwest Virginia. The most notable thing about the Legion was that several companies were made up of Nort Carolina Cherokee Indians. They served the Confederate cause mainly in the mountians of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Late in the war a detachment from the Legion served with elements of Lee's army in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. If you could find a copy I'am sure you'd enjoy it ! The book contains " muster rolls " of the various companies that's where I found your ancestor. Hope this helps

God Bless,

Glenn Land
