Lieut. Hunter, age 25 when enlisted, a resident of Halifax County, was captured at the fall of Fort Fisher. According to his service file, Lieut. Hunter spent two months in prison, being exchanged in early March 1865 at Boulware's Wharf on the James River, near City Point, Va. Released on furlough after a brief examination in a hospital, he wasn't able to return to his command before the war ended.
