My Great Grandfather Captain John Henry Ray, Co. K 35th NC Mtd Inf.and I believe Commanded a Company of Cherokees. He also served in Kirk's Regiment. He deserted from the South was Commissioned a Captain came back under Breckenridge's amnesty appointed Captain in Company K., then went back North after 2 weeks with his entire Company 240 men. Moved to Oklahoma approximately 1882 with his family. My Grandfather Henry L. Ray met and married my grandmother Mary Catherine Parker who was born in Texas and was attending the School for Indian girls at the Wapanucka Indian Academy, Wapanucka, Oklahoma where she met and later married my Grandfather whom she taught to read and write.
