Chief,

Right you are! My research, into the unit my friends and I portray at reenactments, shows that only 1/3 lb. of bacon and 1 lb. of corn meal was issued to them for a 3 day period when they abandoned their positions at Chaffin's Bluff to join the retreat. This comes to 1.77 oz. of meat per day and 5.33 oz. of corn meal per day! And this was the only ration. It's kind of hard to march and fight on that. To give them credit, the unit put up a heck of a fight at Sayler's Creek. After reading Maj. William S. Basinger's (of the 18th Ga. Bn.) report of the fight at Sayler's Creek,

one wonders how men could fight so tenaciously on such rations. The men of Levi's-Barr's Battery, Stiles' Battalion, in Crutchfield's Brigade were from my hometown. You being a Georgian, please read the report of the fight. Makes you proud to be a Southerner! These guys charged Union Artillery with bayonets!
