Great Debate of 1861

In 1861 the two ralling cries of the common people/soldiers was not the political rethoric going on in Washington, or Charleston, in New York, or Richmond.

The two agruments which were most common among the common folks was "Preserving the Union" as oppossed to "States Right". "States Rights" here being defined as Secession and self government, which was Independence of United States Governmental authority.

Which one was correct?

We have debated in the past whether Secession was legal, or not. The legality is not the question here. Nor am I asking which side in the debate had the most impact, or least consquences, in changing our present day lives. Because neither side could foresee the future in 1861. Not of the future political and economic value of the several states remaining unified as one nation. Nor whether the slaves would remain in slavery and the institution never being abolished.

I am asking, what is the most important overriding principal in this debate? Any why?

Was the South's desire, for self government, Right or wrong?

Likewise was the North's desire, to preserve the Union of States, Right or Wrong?

I assume that everyone has an opinion, please try to limit your rational to 1861 attitudes and conditions.
