It does appear to me that many who joined believed they were there to defend their state, and in doing so, their homes. They may not have believed it would come to a point when they were indeed in the regular army with all of its rules and regs. Must have been quite a shock. Serving under Bragg sent some over the edge. Understandable. I still have a difficult time reconciling the photo's I've seen of the troops at Barrancas and the fort as it is today. It just looks a lot smaller. The parade ground wouldn't hold a decent High School Band. With the sand, fleas, flys and heat,must have made home seem like heaven.
