Numbers are not necessarily used in determining if a battle or war can be won. The American War for Independence, the Battle of Chancellorsille, Rorke's Drift, are examples that the out numbered or out matched can win.
If you take into account that the mere presence of General Jackson combined with Lee on the battlefield was worth a division or two due to reputation alone. Jackson's death dealt a tremendous blow to the moral of Confederate soldiers everywhere. Because of this teams outstanding successes ANV soldiers feared nothing, and glady faced death for them because they knew they were giving their lives for a successful cause. On the other hand the loss of Stonewall boosted the Northern moral and gave them hope that they could now hope to win. This was no fantasy, this was what is most important in winning wars, the ability to keep the enemy scared and your troops confident.
