Another reason for Anderson's actions

The Diary of a Public Man, Unpublished passages from the secret history of the American Civil War and Abraham Lincoln's early Administration, 1946.

"Washington March 6th...[written interview with family member of Major Anderson who had just personally interviewed him at Charleston]..[Major Anderson] does not sympathize at all with the States which have now seceded, but he thinks the provocation given them in the action and attitude of the Northern Abolitionist an adequate provacation [to do so];...Major Anderson would unhesitatingly obey the orders of a Confederate Secretary of War were Kentucky to withdraw from the Union and join this new and menancing organization....Major Anderson would never had abandoned Fort Moultrie had he not thought wise to remove himself from a position in which he was liable to be commanded by the authorities of South Carolina, his determination being to retain the control of the position primarily in the interest of his own Commonwealth of Kentucky, so that Kentucky might in no way be committed by his action either for or against the retention of the forts in Charleston Harbor."

This is great book. More thoughts on Anderson to come.
