Re: Was the Confederacy meant to be permanent?

That was an interesting question.

I do believe so, but as Mr.Benjamin pointed out, there was many "if"`s to that.

One side we know, is that the government in each state was very independent - especially in the states that was a part of the old colonies. As we also know,Davis had a hard time during the War to cooperate and coordinate logistics because of this and it was one of the reasons why the War went as is did.

The South would have been very dependent of Europe in it`s first decade after the War for economical reasons. I don`t believe the relations between the CSA and the US would be normalized for quite some time on the government level.

I do believe the different states in CSA would hold together, but it would be less centralized than during the War. I think the different governors would insist on that.

The reason why the Confederacy would last is that every state had to stay in it. If a state would succeed from the confederation it would be a "sitting duck". They would have little ground to move on - on one side bitter friends and on the other, a bitter foe. It is unlikely a confederate state would take its chances on that road.. .

An another aspect is I think war in general would not be over. This time it would not be with the US, but with Mexico. I believe the Mexicans would have tried to regain lost ground. The border states would lay open for attack, because neither Texas,New Mexico or Arizona would had the resources to stop them.
