Re: what if Mr Lincoln ?
In Response To: what if Mr Lincoln ? ()

Sally,

Our views and opinions of what Mr. Lincoln might have done, based on his writing, speeches and actions prior to his assassination is certainly a topic for discussion. Perhaps, you could make the question a little more specific? I've always felt that we would have a different view of President Lincoln had he lived through his second term. Many of his views were far less radical and punitive towards the Southern states, than were the views of the Radical Republicans in the Congress. Abe may have faced some of the same problems that Andrew Johnson encountered, even to the point of impeachment. Because of the way we "generally" view him, this seems unimaginable, but I'm not so sure he would've gotten through a second term unscathed. I've always thought Winston Churchill is the penultimate example of a politician who was loved and followed during war, then discarded immediately after. A discussion of this "what if" would be a welcomed diversion from the discussions over the last couple of days.
