I know this man died in Confederate service but no one has proof that he ever saw America. A good number of sailors on the Alabama were English....so where is home for this Sailor, Alabama or England? Just thinking out loud.

John Adams (probably alias), Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama, joined at Cape Town, August 15, 1863, deserted - captured and returned, reduced to Landsman, February 16, 1864; missing in action, June 19, 1864, during the engagement with the USS Kearsarge, off Cherbourg, France, presumed drowned.

Richard F. Armstrong, Lieutenant, CSS Alabama, born in Georgia; wounded, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, during the engagement with the USS Kearsarge. Died in 1904, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Edward Dean Burrell, Seaman, CSS Alabama, captured June 19, 1864, and paroled. Shipped from the Tycoon. After the war, joined the merchant marine service and died at sea, November 28, 1865. Buried in Colaba, Bombay, India.

Simeon W. Cummings, Third Assistant Engineer, CSS Alabama; born in New York; accidentally killed at Saldanha Bay, South Africa, on August 3, 1863. Originally buried at Saldanha Bay, but remains removed in 1994 and reburied at Columbia, Tennessee.
Asa Douglas, Captain, CSS Sumpter, died on May 18, 1906, and is buried at the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Miles J. Freeman, Chief Engineer
George Townley Fullam, Master's Mate, CSS Alabama, was born on March 21, 1841, at Kingston-upon-Hull, in England. Joined the CS Navy at the age of 21, and signed aboard the Alabama on July 29, 1862. After the war, joined the merchant marine and commanded the steamer Marlborough, which was lost with all hands, at or near the Bay of Biscay, in November or December, 1879. Fullam left a journal of his service aboard the Alabama which was later published as THE JOURNAL OF GEORGE TOWNLEY FULLAM, edited by Charles G. Summersell.
