Thanks to everyone for an interesting thread on Barlow, Gordon, Chamberlain, etc. Thanks for the book sources. I find it interesting to consider the backgrounds of these men in light of their achievments on the field, their patriotic fervor, and what they did later, if there was a later, etc.
But you're right, the sense of noblesse oblige seems to have evaporated from the privaleged classes. Think it was still there to some extent up thru WW2 (Bush senior is a good example), but nowadays--ha!
Barlow has that same look of determination as Lt. Cushing, USN. Kind of slight, like Audie Murhpy wsa, but with the guts of a whole regiment.
