Actually if you read more on Mr. Jefferson, he did not want to secede and did not ask to be President. Davis was one of the last Southern Senators to resign his seat. But his loyalty was to the Constitution of the United States, something Your #2 man considered bothersome and circumvented with the excuse extrodinary circumstances call for extrodinary measures, regardless of what the Consitution said.

Anytime the Consutution is gone around it leaves a hole for further traffic to follow. Your wonderful Mr. Lincoln would have rather had free rein to "save his Union". Instead of rules to prevent him from doing as he pleased.
