Amazing. I was there in April and it was a nice day. While there it hit me that those in the camps had to be more comfortable than those in the fort. It was stifeling. The only way to get any breeze was to be at the wall and that wasn't too safe back then. The 'Parade Ground' wasn't really used as such was it? It's too small. The cistern was there and with the cannon around the edge, there was no room. Had to be hot in those clothes too. Inside, it wasn't that bad. Lots of bats there now. To see the work and know how it was done just boggles the mind that it has lasted (with some repairs). With the different bugs and critters they contended with, you can't help but admire our ancestors. After this misery, they went on too worse. We come from good stock, just haven't had to be that tough. Climbing the steps in the passage between the fort and water battery and then those steps at the battery wore me out. Of course I was herding cats (Kindergarten class)too.
