I understand that there are things that happen that we think of today as brutal. I know the reason the wardens of the Union prisons weren't reprimanded. I also had family in the Pacific in WWII. Had an uncle in the Bay of Pigs. What the CIA did to him to get him to go there after he'd already retired should be illegal. So many things are 'excused' and we do let them go by. That is why I'm at a loss as to why we are just now going after soldiers who are doing what has been done in earlier conflicts.

My point is that Wirtz was not the monster he was made out to be. He was trying to do the best he could with what he had. At least he wasn't keeping food, medicine and blankets from the prisoners on purpose. There was nothing to give them.
