question about shells

floks, i had a friend who was hunting for arrow heads deap in the woods around st. francisville, la. he found some artillery shells, i brough one for $75.00. would like info about it. best i can describe it is it is cone shaped, several inches down from the pointed nose is a band with grooves in the band. near the end is a copper, or brass ring, about two inches wide. just below is one or two rings, hard to tell. at the bottom of the shell is a hole where the fuse would go. can anyone give me an idea what i might have brought? also how safe is it. not sure if fuse is still it or not.one side of the shell is in excellent shape, the other side is pitted.shell weighs about 15 or 20 pounds.
