Randy with the description you have provided it appears to be post Civil War, particularly with the bands you are describing. The pointed end is most likely be the fuse and there my friend is where the dangers lie.
It could be a point detonating fuse, point detonating time delayed, or several other variances of fuses ALL which are deadly themselves not to mention the projectile itself. Treat it like it is armed no matter what you do, even if you have carried it out of the woods and have it in your garage.

I sent you an email with some other questions please get back to me when you can and send me a picture, I will at least be able to tell what it is and the period it was manufactured, maybe even if it’s armed or not.
