Alas, but Jim is right about the diminishing Civil War sites in Memphis.

According to one of many web sites for Elmwood Cemetary:

There are twenty-four Confederate generals buried at Historic Elmwood Cemetery who were either officially appointed to general rank or referred to as "General." This includes Nathan Bedford Forrest who died in 1877 and was first interred at Historic Elmwood Cemetery but was moved to Forrest Park in 1904. Also, there are two Union generals, William Jay Smith and Milton T. Williamson, buried at Historic Elmwood Cemetery. Union soldiers had also been buried at Historic Elmwood Cemetery, however, in 1868 were removed and re-interred in the Memphis National Cemetery....,

The venerable Shelby Foote is also buried in Elmwood. It is indeed a beautiful place.

As a native Memphian, now residing in north Mississippi, I suggest Shiloh which is only about a 90 minute drive due east. One of the best preserved of the NMP's,in my opinion. And a great catfish restaurant is adjacent to the park.

Otherwise, hard to go wrong with the many BBQ "joints." Tourists flock to the Rendezvous downtown,

....but my personal favorite [other than my own] is the Commissary by the RR tracks in Germantown. Not far from where old Sherman's train came under attack by some Reb cavalry on the same RR tracks [was the very important east-west Memphis & Charleston RR].

Just be glad you aren't visiting now. It's been 100 degrees or above for most of the last 2 weeks [including today yet again], and above 95 since late June. And with some good old Mississippi River delta humidity to make you gasp for air.

Gosh, with all that BBQ, catfish and humidity, we might make a "good ole boy" out of you.
