Penny, your musing makes me wonder if, today, there are experts on 18th century word meanings who have translated (among other documents) the DoI into words that express their 18th century meaning and then done a side-by-side comparison with a 21st century interpretation of the same document?

I suspect the problem in making that comparison would be in reaching agreement on what either the 18th or 21st century interpretation is?
