Re: If your ancestors were slaves...its okay.

You see that is the problem with the present day study of history.

I have come to the conclusion that we are bound to repeat the mistakes of our past because we draw the wrong conclusions and teach the wrong lessons.

We know from discussions on this very board that the reasons for that conflict were much more fundamental and much more deeply rooted than just the mear issue of slavery. Yet what is the one issue that is taugh as the reason for that war? And why is that? Mearly for political advantage.

Statement like 'I hope the Judge looks at the whole story' tells me that there is a fear that all factors will NOT be taken into account in a Judicial action. Again a distrust of our governmental system just as was present in 1860.

Right now we are going through an observance of the 1957 Central High School Desegration Crisis in Little Rock. And I have never heard such poppycock in all my life as the revisionist history that is being put out, by a "National Park". Having lived during that period of history I am aware that the issues raised at that time were far deeper than mearly that whites and Blacks be able to go to school together.

Yes, there were hotheads that made front page on all the newspapers and we saw our Confederate flag made into a symbol of disrespect. But even Thurgood Marshall the attorney in the Brown v the Board of Education and later United States Supreme Court Justice said that desegration was NOT the purpose of that court case, nor the conclusion that was reached by that Court decision.

It is not what was done that gets my goat. For example the abolishment of slavery and desegration are both good things. It is HOW those things were done and the willingness of the United States Government to use it might against Americans and against Constitutional authority that upsets me.
