Different Dreams

The movie Gettysburg is not one of my favorite movies for the script and acting, but there are a few poignant moments. This little exchange between Fremantle and Longstreet on the morning of July 2nd is one of these, in my opinion.

Col. Arthur Freemantle: You call yourselves Americans, but you're really just transplanted Englishmen. Look at your names: Lee, Hood, Longstreet, Jackson, Stuart...

Lieutenant General James Longstreet: My people were Dutch...

Col. Arthur Freemantle: And the same for your adversaries: Meade, Hooker, Hancock, and - shall I say - Lincoln! The same God, same language, same culture and history, same songs, stories, legends, myths - different dreams. Different dreams. So very sad.

I wonder if we Northerners and Southerners, red-staters and blue-staters, Democrats and Republicans, Conservatives and Liberals, Christians and non-Christians, still have these "Different Dreams."? I think so.
