Re: Different Dreams
In Response To: Different Dreams ()

It always been those different dreams which have always seperated men of all walks of life. It was a different dream that wrote the Magna Carta. It was a different dream that cause the American people to write the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It was different dreams which caused the people of Europe to throw off their Kings.

The problems comes about when there are two or more dreams. How do you access the value of a dream?

Which dream is more valuable in terms of its worth, Freedom, Liberty, Independence, Unity? In 1860 was Independence for the southern state wrong, and was Unity of the nation a more valuable dream? If so why wasn't the same true for England and the American Colonies in 1776? Was Freedom for the Slaves more valuable than the Liberty of the Southern people? If it was wrong to surpress the southern slaves, was it not just as wrong to surpress the freewill of the majority of the southern populas?

Understand we are not talking about practicalities here. We are not talking about what is best for the majority, or the minority, or our nation, or our individual state. We are talking about ideals, concepts, principals, the intangible things that dreams are made of. Those things which transend practical considerations. What is the value of a dream and who is there who is qualified to establish that price?

For example the "REAL" cost of the War Between the States was not in the number of lives lost. Or the numbers of slaves set free. Or the amount of property destroyed, or lost. Or even the Trillions of dollars that both sides spent in their war efforts. No the real cost of that war was not those things. The real cost of that war was in the precieved liberties, which men assumed that they had before the war, which were denied to them, and lost after that War.

Yes, we can live with these changes for the present. But the fact is that we were more at liberty, before the War, with our governnments, even with slavery, than we were after that War and the slaves being freed. And at some point in the future, Government will surpress the Liberty of man to the point where men will start to dream again.

It has always happened that way throughout History. Man will always dream that there has got to be a better way.
