Cult of the South

Throughout my life I've had an interest in the Civil War, the Confederacy and history in general. Over the years I've been active in Civil war re-enactments and am a member of both Union and Confederate descendant organizations as well as various historical societies here in Missouri. From time to time I've heard comments made by some who have referred those who are involved in such organizations as the S.C.V., Daughters of the Confederacy,Confederate re-enactors etc. as being part of that "Cult of the South". I first heard this term used by the media from time to time and just passed it off as mere anti-Southern retoric, but I'm starting to hear it repeated in the public schools and in college by students and professors alike. Now I'm unsure what to make of it or how to respond to this type of terminolgy and what is exactly is meant by it. I certainly don't consider myself and others as members of a "Cult" simply because of our interest in this time period in American history. Can anyone explain this to me.
