Colonel Cross was indeed a very colorful character. He was from my hometown, Lancaster, NH, and there is a monument to him across the street from the public library there. Mike Pride and Mark Travis have written an excellent biography of Cross entitled "My Brave Boys: To War with Colonel Cross and the Fighting Fifth". Pride and Travis contributed to a followup book; "Stand Firm and Fire Low: The Civil War Writings of Colonel Edward E. Cross", authored by Walter Holden, William E. Ross and Elizabeth Slomba.
