Great tale of a great warrior, thanks for posting! Men like Cross, Francis Washburn, and of course Chamberlain, were second to none in terms of devotion to duty and putting it all on the line for their country. I will admit to sour feelings about a lot of what's going on up there today, but doff my hat to an honorable military tradition dating all the way back to King Philip's War. When the need arose, New Englanders stepped up to the plate and fought as hard and skillfully as any soldiers anywhere. And as far as I can tell, they're still doing it.
