Re: Lee's decision to resign his US Army commissio

You Commented; "That is not the standard explanation. That's a sound-bite. Lee did not resign simply because he happened to have been born in the State of Virginia. Virginia happened to be the home of his family and friends, the final resting place of his ancestors, the culture that made him who was he was, the source of his beliefs and values. Lee wrote, "With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home." That's a long way from resigning "simply" because he was a Virginian."

It todays "sound-bite" world this still boils down to Lee not being able to see matters in a deeper context than his Birthplace. That is my point.

As for MY speculation while I am quite sure that Lee was perfectly honest in his writting of his feelings on why he resigned, I am also quite sure that those writting were mearly the tip of the iceberg. That more lays beneath the surface of those letters than mearly the depth of the ink on the paper. That may be speculation on some people part, I call it curiousity.

Such was the character of all of Lee's writting to understate his position. ON such my speculation, I feel is reasonable, because Lee was not totally seperated from the events in Washington in at least the 6 weeks that he was in Washington D.C. prior to his resignation. Lee was not hidden in a dark room or a barrel totally isolated from those events. Or was he? We have NO records of what he was doing during that period of time that I am aware of. Do you have any sources which can clear up Lee's activities or involvement with Winfield Scott and the War Department, or what his duty assignment was during this period?

Why did Scott send for Lee in the first place? Were there not other Officers in Washington who were just as capable of carrying out orders as well as Lee? Don't you think that Lee himself would be asking why he had been summoned? Did Scott tell Lee why he was called to Washington or not? The fact that Lee was called to Washington at all from his command in Texas indictated that the War Department had some sort of plans in the works for Lee to do. What were those plans? All of these are reasonable questions in my mind that have not been answered as far as I know. My speculation is based on possible answers to these questions. Those answers could possibly contribute to at least part of the reasoning that Lee used, which caused him to submit his resignation do you not agree?
