According to Sherman, South Carolina’s secession was the “ACT” that precipitated war…anyone thinking that Lincoln’s actions concerning FT. Sumter would somehow change Sherman’s mind, would be wrong.

I come to this conclusion in Sherman’s address (on Christmas Eve, 1860) to his friend, David F. Boyd, Professor of Ancient History when he (Sherman)learned of S. Carolina seceding…

“ You people of the South, believe there can be such a thing as peaceable secession. You don’t know what you are doing… if you will have it, the North must fight you for it’s own preservation. Yes, South Carolina has by this act precipitated war…”

Much of what he said to Professor Boyd is prophetic, I just don’t have time to type it all down, it comes from the book: Sherman Fighting Prophet by Lloyd Lewis, pages 135-136
