Sherman scholars... educate me

I want to ask those out there who have studied General William T. Sherman to help me get a better grasp on something. I knew he caught trouble for his terms to Joe Johnston but until I read "The Long Surrender" by Burke Davis this week I didn't realize the extent to which Secretary Stanton went after the man.

Who stood with the Generals and who played politics against him. What was the fallout within the army and in Washington over the accusations of aiding Jefferson Davis to escape (For reason of profit). Did Stanton actually committ suicide? If Stanton would attack Gen. Sherman this way, do you feel it in any way lends support to the theory of Stanton being involved with Lincoln's death?
