TR,
I did a quick survey of companies A and B of the 90th Illinois, an all Irish regiment and I find that before January of 1863 there were 26 desertions and after that date there were only 8. So in my opinoin that theory does not hold water based in what I find in this regiment. That is only about two hundred out of 1500+ but I think that should gives us an idea.
