US Army boycott?

The Southern states have a long tradition of sending men into military service of their country. One would suspect that immediately after the Civil War that that tradition would have been suspended. But at least by WWI, the South was again sending large numbers of men into the military. Does anyone know for how long white Southerners would have "boycotted" the US military? Was there a significant Southern presence - besides Joe Wheeler - in the Spanish American War? I know that there were some men who went straight back into the army to serve out west, but it would seem that there must have been a significant reduction right after the War. How long did this last? Did the Yankees play a part by refusing to accept Southerners, or not recruting them? Have any studies ever been done on this? Any information appreciated.
